I see this with the kids I tutor. They don’t want to read the two pages of example problems so they can understand their homework. They go right to the math problem, sometimes ignoring the directions in bold, and proceed to sit there completely confused; soon the teacher is blamed, the book is shut and they say they’ll never figure it out.
